The Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica (National Theater of Costa Rica) is located in downtown San José, Costa Rica. Its construction began in 1891, and it opened to the public on October 21, 1897. The building is national heritage building and is considered the finest historical landmark in the capital. The theatre is a tourist attraction, famous for its colonial interior with lavish furnishings, as well as hosting world class performances weekly. The theatre offers some curious features like a 100 year old mechanical rising and lowering system for the entire orchestra level, using a complex man-powered system located in the basement.
