Gereja Sidang Jemaat Allah Betlehem

Bogor in West Java, Indonesia, has a population of approximately 800,000 in the city and upwards of 2,000,000 in suburban area. Historically, it was the capital of Indonesia during the British occupation and bears the nickname of "The Rain City", as it nearly always rains, even during the dry season. The traditional language of Bogor is Sundanese. Due to the expansion of Jakarta, more people from different ethnicities now live in Bogor and hence Indonesian, the official national language, is becoming more common in the urban area. West Java is predominantly Muslim, with only less than 2% of the population identifying themselves as Christians.

GEREJA SIDANG JEMAAT ALLAH BETLEHEM, which translates to “Assembly of God Betlehem” began with great difficulty in 1965, during the political unrest and the communist party attempting to take government control.  In the beginning the main sanctuary measured about 10m x 20m, fitting only about 400 people. Since 1992 the sanctuary has been re-modelled and expanded a few times. and continues to grow with phase 1 about 50% done, with phase 2 slated to start in the next 2 years. At the moment, it has 4 sanctuaries and when used simultaneously they seat 4500 people. The main sanctuary’s present seating arrangement holds 1700 with the planned cinema style folding chairs, that number will go up to 2000. In North American standards; this is a big church.

The church has been planning a long time for a better long-term audio solution for the rapidly growing Christian parish. Due to budget reasons, a RCF ART500 was used as a temporary system, but desired sound clarity and intelligibility could not be achieved with it. The church has relied on the well educated opinion of Kevin Nair, of Team 108, about the suitability of a line array system for the space.  A small EAW KF730 system was also specked in 2003, but more recently in price vs. performance comparison, the Adamson SpekTrix was the more suitable system for the venue.

The SpekTrix high-end line array system was specked, designed and executed by Kevin Nair and Reeve Long of Team 108, Adamson’s Southeast Asian distributors based in Singapore, who represent many of the world’s most acclaimed pro audio equipment brands. The electro audio consultant was Kevin Nair, Aan Tanumihardja the building architect, and the acoustic consultant for the venue was Putra Ardhana, of ACETS.

The installation design features two single fly point Line arrays on L & R of the stage. Each array consists of eight Adamson SpekTrix 3-way, 5-degree true line source array cabinets, with a single SpekTrix sub flown above them to attain bass coverage for the balcony seating area, as well as two 15-degree SpekTrix Waves in the bottom of each array for extreme down fills. The additional Subwoofer array consists of 2 clusters of 3 Adamson Y10 Subs, placed each side and under the stage. 4 VIETA Professional VT8i full range speaker cabinets are deployed for lip-fills for the first 6m (19.7ft) from the stage edge, complete with signal processing to draw the audio image from the stage instead from the main arrays, to improve natural auditory sensing.
To ensure the system continues its excellent performance, Lab.gruppen C-series C28:4, C48:4 and C68:4’s were used, providing 46,000W of power with each of the 40 output channels loaded at 4Ω. Two XTA DP-6i Installation Series speaker management systems provide a total of 12 outputs for signal processing including an auxiliary channel for the lip fills.

Mr. Rizal Setiadjaja, the project manager, is satisfied with the purchase but still that they still need improvement at the altar call area, which consists of the first to 3rd seated rows. They have also sent their full time sound engineer to school to learn more about pro audio. Andre, a sound engineer and owner of a large production hire company called “Sumber Ria” who often helps the church out during Christmas services explains: “This system provides nice lows and strong mids, which are not so easy to find in competitors line arrays.” Mr Setiadjaja adds: I can hear almost everything, including the musician that I used to think played too softly!”
